Nguyen Van Quyet: 'I was too wrong to react to the referee'

Captain Nguyen Van Quyet apologized to assistant Le Nguyen Thanh for overreacting, after Hanoi lost to Binh Dinh in the 7th round of V-League 2023.

"I was wrong. I overreacted to the assistant referee. I apologize to the referees as well as the fans for this non-standard behavior," midfielder Van Quyet told MetaSports on the morning of April 18. "The game is over, arguing with the referee can't change the outcome. This is a lesson for me."

On the Binh Dinh Stadium yesterday, in the 7th round of the V-League 2023, Mr. Thanh assisted the referee to change an important decision. In the 60th minute, when the score was 1-1, goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan came out incorrectly and fouled Rafaelson. Referee Nguyen Manh Hai initially gave Binh Dinh a free kick close to the penalty area, but after listening to advice from assistant Nguyen Thanh, it was converted to a penalty. On the 11m mark, Rafaelson scored to make it 2-1. In injury time, the Brazilian striker scored one more goal, completing a 3-1 victory for Binh Dinh. This is also Hanoi's first defeat in the V-League this season.

After the match, Van Quyet expressed his disapproval and collided with his assistant Nguyen Thanh. Standing next to him, referee Manh Hai immediately drew a red card directly, while Van Quyet was surprised.

Regarding the question of elbowing assistant Nguyen Thanh, the captain of Hanoi FC said: "At the end of the match, I went to the referee to argue. Then the young players also ran to react. When I interrupted Bui, Hoang Viet Anh, I don't understand if there was any misunderstanding. I was surprised because I received a red card. I thought the referee showed a red card to goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan, but in any case, my reaction was wrong. I sincerely apologize to assistant Nguyen Thanh, the referee board and the fans. I accept the punishment!".

Van Quyet is the current Vietnam Golden Ball. He is also leading the scoring list in the V-League 2023, with six goals in seven games - two more than Binh Duong's Rimario. In 2016, he once pushed referee Pham Hoang Cong Khanh, in the Khanh Hoa match in the 4th round of the V-League. Because of that action, the Hanoi striker was excluded from the national team.

Assistant Nguyen Thanh once collided with a player, in the Thanh Hoa - Ho Chi Minh City Club match in the 9th round of the V-League 2021. Ho Chi Minh City's goalkeeper Thanh Thang was determined to have headbutted Mr. Thanh's face after the match, leading to replace dentures. After that, the VFF Disciplinary Committee fined Thanh Thang 15 million dong, suspended for three matches for overreacting to the referee during the match.
