Belgium Jakob Ingebrigtsen broke the 2000m world record at the Brussels Diamond League with 4 minutes 43.13 seconds.

The Norwegian runner's achievement is only one second faster than the old world record. The old record set by Moroccan athlete Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999 was 4 minutes 44.79 seconds. This was one of the running records that stood the longest before being broken.

Ingebrigtsen is the defending world champion at 5,000m and Olympic champion at 1,500m. In June, he set a world record of two miles (more than 3,200m) in Paris.

"I think I'm at a point where I can think about breaking world records. That will be my goal in the future," Ingebrigtsen said after the race in Brussels.

The 22-year-old runner also thanked the organizers for creating an ideal race track, helping him achieve results beyond expectations.

The Diamond League leg in Brussels on September 8 also witnessed other impressive performances. In the women's 200 m, Jamaican runner Shericka Jackson finished first with a record of 21.48 seconds. This is the second best achievement in the history of this content.

In women's javelin throwing, Japanese athlete Haruka Kitaguchi achieved the best result in 2023 at 67.38 m in the final competition, helping her surpass other strong opponents.

In the 400m hurdles, Dutch and world champion Femke Bol has no opponents. She finished in 52.11 seconds, setting a new record of the tournament. In the women's 100m event, Jamaican Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah showed her comeback after a season of constant injuries. She won with a year's best performance of 10.84 seconds.

In the women's 1,500 m event, British athlete Laura Muir set her best performance of the year, 3 minutes 55.34 seconds, to surpass Irish opponent Ciara Mageean, who set a national record of 3 minutes 55. 87 seconds.
