Pochettino makes his Chelsea debut with a 5-0 win
At Kenan Memorial Stadium, North Carolina, Ian Maatsen scored twice for Chelsea in the first half. In the third minute, Nicolas Jackson rushed into the Wrexham penalty area and then passed to the left, creating conditions for Maatsen to cushion the ball to open the scoring. In the 42nd minute, after hitting the wall with Carney Chukwuemeka, the 21-year-old Dutch winger shot from 17 meters to make it 2-0.
Wrexham shot 11 times like Chelsea, but could not score. Towards the end of the match, the English third-place team collapsed and lost three more goals. Conor Gallagher shot from long range to make it 3-0 after 80 minutes, before rookie Christopher Nkunku dribbled past the keeper and made it 4-0 in 90 minutes. Just before the final whistle, left-back Ben Chilwell Tires sealed victory for Chelsea.
The win over Wrexham was Chelsea's first friendly of the summer and Pochettino's debut as manager. Chelsea appointed the former captain of Tottenham and PSG from June.
In the starting line-up, Pochettino prioritized young players and rookies, like Nicolas Jackson. Famous players like Raheem Sterling or Ben Chilwell came on in the second half. Goalkeeper Kepa and centre-back Thiago Silva were also present, but did not play.
The win over Wrexham was during Chelsea's US tour. Here, Pochettino's teachers and students also met Brighton on July 22, Newcastle on July 26, Fulham on July 30 and Dortmund on August 2.
On August 13, Chelsea will host Liverpool in the opening match of the 2023-2024 Premier League. Last season, the Blues ranked 12th and did not qualify for the European Cup this season.
