Pogba: 'Ronaldo has great discipline'

Midfielder Paul Pogba thinks he has never seen a player as dedicated to training as Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Man Utd.

"Ronaldo's discipline is on another level," Pogba told Field of Stories. "I've seen a lot of professional players go to training early or work hard to recover. But if there's someone who works hard every day and never stops, it's Ronaldo."

Pogba and Ronaldo together spent more than 10 years playing football for Man Utd and Juventus, although the two have only been teammates for a season 2021-2022. At that time, Ronaldo scored 24 goals in 38 matches for Man Utd, while Pogba only had one goal in 27 matches. "There are days when I will feel bored training, but Ronaldo never misses even a day," added the French midfielder. "He has the discipline to do it every day, really different."

Pogba left Man Utd in the summer of 2022 after the end of his contract, to return to Juventus. But having not played a game for Juventus during this period, he had to have knee surgery and wait for the day to return. And Ronaldo also only stayed for a few more months, before terminating his contract with Man Utd at the end of November 2022 to become a free player.

Pogba came to study at the youth training academy of Man Utd in the summer of 2009, when Ronaldo left Old Trafford to move to Real Madrid. The 29-year-old midfielder was promoted to the first team in 2011, and played for two seasons under manager Alex Ferguson before moving to Juventus for the first time.

According to Pogba, Ferguson can still be successful if he continues to coach until now. "Ferguson is not the type of coach who talks as much as Pep Guardiola," he said. "He has associates and players to speak for. If there are still people like that around, Ferguson can still be successful in modern football."

Ferguson is the most successful manager in football history with 49 titles with St Mirren, Aberdeen and Man Utd. If he only counted achievements with Man Utd, he also set a record with 38 championships, including 13 times crowned the Premier League. The closest coach capable of catching up with Ferguson is Guardiola with 32 trophies.
