Azerbaijani player Le Quang Liem Ruslan Ponomariov both standard games, had to tie-break fast chess in the third round of the chess World Cup.

In the second and third round on August 6, Quang Liem held the black piece, so he never prevailed against Ponomariov. The former FIDE champion displayed solid play even though at one point the computer judged White to have the upper hand. He actively created a constant draw after 33 moves, without risking finding a way to win.

The two players will therefore have to spend an extra day playing a fast-paced chess tie-break, starting at 6pm today 7/8. They will play two quick games of 25 minutes, adding 10 seconds after each move (25+10 format). If they don't win or lose, they will play two more games of 10+10. If still tied, they play two games 5+3. If they continue to draw, they play more 3+2 games until someone wins. Whoever continues in this match will meet Nikita Vitiugov or Ferenc Berkes - both players have lower Elo than Quang Liem.

Many players will also have to tie-break like Quang Liem in this round, such as Anish Giri, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Fabiano Caruana, Wesley So and defending champion Jan-Krzysztof Duda. The top two players in the world Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura both went on with a score of 1.5-0.5.

The second day of the third round appeared unexpectedly, when the Uzbek prodigy Javokhir Sindarov held the black piece but beat the master Maxime Vachier-Lagrave to enter the fourth round. And the number one Indian player Gukesh Dommaraju continued to flourish when he defeated compatriot Narayanan Sunilduth Lyna to continue.

The Chess World Cup, which takes place every two years, is the largest individual tournament for men and women. This year's tournament took place in Baku city, Azerbaijan, from July 30 to August 24, with 206 players in the Open group and 103 players in the Women's group. The players compete in the knockout stage, selecting the top three players in each group to attend the Candidates. Vietnam only has one representative at the tournament, the 15th seed Quang Liem. His best in the past was in the fourth round.
