Quang Liem rematched Carlsen in Champions Chess Tour
Quang Liem started the first place in Chessable Masters against Fabiano Caruana in the quarterfinals early in the morning of April 4, Hanoi time, with four consecutive draws. These two players have to play armageddon to compete for the semi-finals and the victory belongs to the number seven player in the world, while the Vietnamese representative goes down to the first round of the losing bracket.
At the same time, Carlsen also drew Vladislav Artemiev after the first four games, so he played armageddon. Like Caruana, Artemiev took the white piece in this decisive game and won, pushing Carlsen down to the losing bracket against Quang Liem. "Today was a really bad day for me, unacceptable," Carlsen said. "Of course the opponent has to be strong to take advantage of my mistakes, but I do everything to lose."
Carlsen will meet Quang Liem at 10:15 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 4, in a four-game quick match with armageddon if needed. Previously, the two players also clashed many times in the Champions Chess Tour, and Quang Liem won one match.
Artemiev will face Caruana in the first semi-final, while Hikaru Nakamura and Wesley So will face off in the second semi-final. The other match in the losing bracket was between Levon Aronian and Vladimir Fedoseev.
In third place, Truong Son won the first two matches against Matthias Bluebaum and Alvar Alonso Rosell with a score of 1.5 - 0.5 to enter the third round. Both of Truong Son's wins came when he held the black piece. His opponent in the next match was Eduardo Iturrizaga Bonelli.
Chessable Masters taking place from April 3 to April 7 is the second tournament of the Champions Chess Tour 2023 system, after Airthings Masters. This time, all three Vietnamese players passed the qualifying round in March 2023, to enter three different divisions. First place consists of eight top players, second place 16 and third place 32 people, competing in a dual format, with a prize fund of 235,000 USD. A player who loses two matches will be disqualified, and the winner of each class will not lose more than one match.
