Quang Liem to the highest position in his career
Defending champion Quang Liem (Elo 2,728) led the white army to defeat the number one African player Bassem Amin (2,694) on the evening of July 19, after having a great advantage from the middle. The number one player in Vietnam moved quickly from the opening, and at one point was nearly 50 minutes ahead of the opponent. After the mistakes in the middle, the Egyptian representative lost his quality when entering the endgame, and asked to lose after 45 moves.
This victory helped Quang Liem earn 4.5 more Elo, bringing his coefficient to 2,737, ranking 18th in the world, above players like Alexander Grischuk, Jan-Krzysztof Duda or Veselin Topalov. After two standard games won in Biel, Quang Liem accumulated 9 Elo, ranked fourth in Asia, approaching a personal record coefficient of 2,739.
Quang Liem's victory was the only match to be decided in the second round of standard chess, helping the 32-year-old player move up one step to third in the tournament with 13 points. Czech player David Navara (2,689) is leading with 15.5 points, while Vincent Keymer (2,690) is second with 13 points like Quang Liem but more than the sub-index.
Biel Grandmaster is the first standard chess tournament Quang Liem has attended, since this same tournament last year. He is the defending champion, and is the second seed at this year's tournament after Duong Yuong Y (2,735).
Biel Grandmaster 2023 takes place from July 16 to July 26 in Switzerland, with eight players with an average Elo of 2,699. The prize is scored from three types of chess, in which the fast chess content has ended. The players will play five more games of standard chess and 14 games of blitz. Each game of standard chess wins four points, fast chess two points and blitz chess one point, standard draw 1.5 points, fast chess one point and blitz chess 0.5 points.
In the standard game of three chess, Quang Liem will hold the black piece to meet Keymer at 7pm today, July 20, Hanoi time. He will be at the top of the table if he wins Keymer, and Navara loses to Jules Moussard.
