Quyet Chien entered the semi-finals of the world billiard tournament for the first time
Quyet Chien and Zanetti had a close score at the beginning of the match in Ankara on the evening of September 9, when the difference was never more than three points. However, when leading 15-13, the number one player in Vietnam went in a series of 11 points, to create a safe gap after 12 rounds. The world's number two player only scored a maximum of six consecutive points in this match, so he could not catch up with Quyet Chien. With high performance, the world's number 10 player scored points in all eight final rounds and won 50-34 after 25 rounds.
Zanetti is 61 years old, two-time world champion, in 2002 and 2008. And Quyet Chien is 39 years old, achieving a performance of 2.5 points per turn in this match, to reach the semi-finals for the first time. Previously, Quyet Chien won the World Cup twice in Ho Chi Minh City in 2018 and Porto 2023.
The World Championship takes place annually, this year held in Ankara, Turkey from September 6 to September 10. The World Cup takes place about six or seven times a year. The Vietnamese player with the best performance at the world championship was Nguyen Duc Anh Chien when he reached the final and only lost to Torbjorn Blomdahl. In addition, Ma Minh Cam or Nguyen Quoc Nguyen both reached the semi-finals.
Quyet Chien won all the way to the semi-finals this year. In the group stage, he defeated Omer Karakurt and Tolgahan Kiraz, with an average of 1,702 points per match. In the round of 16, he defeated Emilio Sciacca 50-21 after 25 rounds, then beat Javier Vera 50-34 in 30 rounds. Quyet Chien's opponent in the semi-finals is defending champion Tayfun Tasdemir.
Vietnam still has one representative in the quarterfinals, 28-year-old player Bao Phuong Vinh, and he meets Pedro Piedrabuena on the evening of September 9.
