Real paid the price for the victory against Chelsea

Real Madrid may lose the main central defender pair after the 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the second leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.

Eder Militao received a yellow card after 20 minutes for a foul on Kai Havertz. This is the third yellow card of the Brazilian midfielder from the beginning of the 2022-2023 Champions League season, forcing him to miss the semi-final first leg - most likely Man City.

From the semi-finals, UEFA will remove the cards for players penalized in previous rounds. But this rule only applies to players who have not received enough cards to lead to suspension. Full-back Dani Carvajal will be given two cards.

In the match at Stamford Bridge on the evening of April 18, Real's remaining main defender, David Alaba, had to leave the field immediately after the first half. According to Marca, the Austrian star relapsed with a biceps muscle injury. This is the type of injury that recurs for 60% of players. This could put Alaba out of action for a while.

Last season, Sampdoria player Filip Djuricic had to miss six months due to a recurrence of the same injury. Bilbao player Asier Villalibre also relapsed three times between September 2021 and January 2022.

Real also had to replace Karim Benzema in the 71st minute. The French striker was annoyed after the step of a Chelsea player. "Militao will not play the semi-final first leg, but hopefully Alaba can recover," coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "He had a hamstring problem and we had to substitute at the end of the first half. Benzema had a collision. It annoyed him late in the game and we substituted."

Winning 2-0 in the second leg, and in the end 4-0, Ancelotti's teachers and students entered the semi-finals to meet the winner of the Bayern Munich - Man City pair. Man City is holding the advantage thanks to a 3-0 victory in the quarterfinals of the first leg. Last season, Real beat Man City 6-5 in the semi-finals.
