Ronaldo was mocked for fouling Di Maria
In the first half of the Al Nassr - Benfica friendly match at Algavre, Portugal, Benfica striker Di Maria stole the ball after a weak pass from an Al Nassr defender. From the front line, Ronaldo rushed home with the intention of regaining the ball. But Di Maria skillfully bounced the ball over the Portuguese striker's head and then covered the ball very tightly. Ronaldo then fouled Di Maria.
Commenting on this ball, Twitter account @SrGonzitA wrote: "Best player in Saudi Arabia? World champion teaches him what football is." Another wrote: "Di Maria's attitude is terrible. Why make fun of an unknown player from an unknown league." @VillalbaGerman7 wrote: "Oh man, Ronaldo has retired. Doing so only makes you an idiot".
Ronaldo and Di Maria are former teammates at Real Madrid. After the end of his contract with Juventus, Di Maria returned to Benfica, the team that made his name famous. Right in his debut, the Argentina international proved his class with the opening goal, helping Benfica beat Al Nassr 4-1.
This is Al Nassr's second big loss in three days. Before that, they lost 0-5 to Spanish club Celta Vigo. In this match, Ronaldo kicked the striker in a 4-2-3-1 formation but did not show much in the 84 minutes of being on the field. His performance has been compared to Di Maria's.
On July 17, Ronaldo made headlines when he announced that the Saudi Pro League was better than the American professional football league MLS - where Lionel Messi had just moved to. This statement caused a lot of controversy. Former MLS star Mike Lahoud thinks Ronaldo "smoke too much hookah" to say that.
Under the clip Ronaldo was overtaken by Di Maria, the fans did not forget to repeat Ronaldo's statement. The account @AliMerino912 wrote: "Every time Ronaldo declares something, the law of cause and effect applies to him." @Mauro_Aliendro commented: "Didn't Ronaldo learn anything from Mbappe? If you say something against Messi or Argentina, there will be retribution."
The excellent performance also earned Di Maria praise. @AguilaTapatiaSD commented: "Di Maria deserves to take off his hat and praise for this ball. Instead of helping people sell tickets in the MLS or Saudi, he chose to return to the club that gave him the opportunity as a young player." Another commented: "Deserves a world champion".
