Rune was eliminated in the first round of the US Open
Having won Carballes Baena in three sets at Wimbledon two months ago, Rune could not repeat the same result against his Spanish opponent in New York. The Danish player has had problems with form and fitness, making 43 self-defeating errors and losing his sixth match in a row in the past month.
Rune was inhibited before the match, when the organizers assigned him to play at field 5. After drawing 1-1 with Carballes Baena through the first two sets, Rune had a knee problem in the third set. Having received medical care, the Danish player won the game to catch the ball when he returned, but then lost the hinge game and lost 3-6.
Set four saw Rune's decline both professionally and mentally. He quickly lost 2-6, thereby being eliminated in the first round of the US Open for the second time in three appearances. Thanks to the decline of Rune, Carballes Baena won the world's top 10 opponent for the first time. The player ranked 63rd on the ATP scoreboard will meet Aslan Karatsev or Jiri Lehecka in the second round.
Rune admits not preparing well for US Open. He is the highest seed among Novak Djokovic's semifinalists. The fact that Rune was eliminated early made Nole's branch a bit easier to breathe.
In the same quarter-finals with Rune, last year's runner-up Casper Ruud struggled to beat the host Emilio Nava 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) on the 17th court. Norway thus won its 200th match on the ATP. This match, Nava played well with 72 winners compared to Ruud's 27, but lacked stability at important moments. In the second round, Ruud will face Chinese opponent Zhang Zhizhen.
The women's singles event also saw a big surprise in the first round when eighth seed Maria Sakkari lost 4-6, 4-6 to world number 71, Rebeka Masarova. Other names such as Iga Swiatek, Victoria Azarenka, Beatriz Haddad Maia, Elena Rybakina or Belinda Bencic all went on.
