Schauffele got lucky at Dell Match Play
The lucky collision happened at the par3 17th hole, when Schauffele was in need of at least a draw to enter the knockout round but was 1 up by Tom Hoge. That hole, Schauffele hit with a 9 iron and dropped the club in disappointment after the shot.
The direction of the balloon indicates that he is about to enter a bad position. However, it hit the rocky shore and then turned upside down, then hit the slope to roll back to the short rough grass behind the green, nearly 12 meters from the flag.
From that position, Schauffele recorded a birdie after two shots of chip and put. Thanks to that, he balanced the game, when Hoge finished bogey. On the last hole, Schauffele birdie again, and the opponent keeps par. With that result, Schauffle won 1 up and won the right to advance.
Dell Match Play 2023 in the individual pit format hosted by the PGA Tour, bringing together the top 64 in the world to compete for a $20 million prize fund at Austin Country Club, Texas from March 22 to 26.
The tournament starts with 16 groups playing round-robin to select the 16 highest-scoring competitors to the knockout round, including semi-finals and finals. According to this process, from the starting line to the finish line there will be seven matches.
Last year, Scottie Scheffler picked up the trophy after defeating Kevin Kisner with a 4 & 3 result. The hole match ends when the number of ups is greater than the number of holes remaining, represented by the number of ups that came first.
This year's tournament, defending champion Scheffler won three matches, and Schauffle entered the knockout stage for the first time. Four seasons ago, Schauffele did not pass the group circle.
