Scholes: 'Man Utd defeat is a disgrace'

Former midfielder Paul Scholes criticized Man Utd for lacking enthusiasm and being overwhelmed in the 0-4 defeat at Sevilla in the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final.

"It was another harsh night, when Man Utd could not cope with the enthusiasm of Sevilla," Scholes told BT Sport. "This defeat is a disgrace. Man Utd can't fight and are overwhelmed."

The turning point of the match at Sanchez Pizjuan yesterday came right in the 8th minute, when David de Gea passed to captain Harry Maguire who was being pressed by three players right in front of the penalty area. Erik Lamela successfully scrambled, creating conditions for Youssef En-Nesyri to escape and put his left foot in the near corner to open the score.

The hosts doubled the lead thanks to Loic Bade's header in the 47th minute and continued to benefit from the opponent's mistake. In the 81st minute, De Gea handled the error when he rushed out of the penalty area to catch a high ball without pressure, helping En-Nesyri put the ball into the empty goal, completed the double and sealed a 3-0 victory. This result caused Man Utd to be eliminated from the Europa League with a total score of 2-5.

According to Scholes, Man Utd needs the experience of the pillars when they have to go to Sevilla - the most successful club in Europa League history with six championships in 2006, 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2020. However, the English player was disappointed when De Gea himself made a mistake that caused Man Utd to soon concede a goal. He also said that Man Utd "shot himself in the foot" from the first leg, when Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire respectively scored to lead to a 2-2 draw.

On social networks, many Man Utd fans were outraged when Maguire actively asked for the ball and then passed the error, thereby helping Sevilla open the scoring and create a turning point from the 8th minute. However, former Wales player Robbie Savage said that De Gea is the one responsible for this goal. "Man Utd try to deploy from home Maguire can do better, but why does De Gea not pass to Wan-Bissaka?", he asked on BT Sport.

England player Gary Neville shared this view when writing on Twitter: "Maguire will be criticized, but I don't like that pass from De Gea."

Man Utd are eliminated in the first arena this season, after winning the League Cup. For the rest of the season, Erik ten Hag's teachers and students will focus on the goal of top 4 in the Premier League and winning the FA Cup - where they meet Brighton at Wembley in the semi-finals on April 23.
