Sifan Hassan disillusioned with gold medal at Budapest 2023
Hassan showed great ambition when competing in all three events of 1,500m, 5,000m, 10,000m at Budapest 2023.
The Dutch runner attended all three events in Tokyo 2021, winning a gold medal of 5,000m, 10,000m and a bronze medal of 1,500m. She is the only athlete in Olympic history to win medals in the middle and long distance events in one Olympics. Hassan is also the second female runner to win the 5,000m and 10,000m races at the Olympics.
But the 30-year-old runner had an unsuccessful run at the World Championships in Budapest 2023. Hassan started by stumbling while leading and finishing 11th out of 22 runners in the 10,000m final. Reaching the 1,500m final on August 22, she won a bronze medal with 3 minutes and 56 seconds, then finished the tournament with a 5,000m silver medal.
Although she did not win any gold, Budapest 2023 this time still recorded Hassan with a better record than Eugene 2022 - where this runner was empty-handed when he finished sixth at 5,000m and fourth at 10,000m.
At the women's 5,000m final on the evening of August 26, champion candidate Faith Kipyegon used a tactic of hiding from the wind when maintaining her position in the leading group most of the time. She only exerted herself when she was about 600m from the finish line to overcome the defending champion Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia.
Here, there are three athletes gradually separating from the top, namely Kipyegon, Hassan and Beatrice Chebet of Kenya. After that, Hassan continued to push up the pace, but Kipyegon was the winner with 14 minutes 53 seconds 88. Her compatriot Chebet won bronze with 14 minutes 54 seconds 33, and Hassan finished second with 14 minutes 54 seconds 11 .
Kipyegon became the 5,000m world champion in his sixth time running the middle distance. The record of Kenya's runner in the previous five times was 14 minutes 5 seconds 20 - world record parameters - at Diamond League Paris 2023, 14 minutes 31 seconds 95 at Diamond League Eugene 2015, 14 minutes 32 seconds 31 in qualifying Budapest 2023, 14 minutes 44 seconds 51 at Diamond League Paris 2015 and 14 minutes 53 seconds 90 in Kenya qualifiers 2023.
Kipyegon also completed a double title at Budapest 2023, after finishing first in the 1,500m content with 3 minutes 54 seconds 87 and became the first female athlete to win three 1,500m world gold medals.
In the previous four world athletics tournaments, in the 1,500m event, Kipyegon won the 2017 London gold medal, Eugene 2022 and the Beijing 2015 silver medal, Doha 2019. She also won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, Rio 2016, Diamond League 2017, 2021, 2022 and Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2014.
Kenya's runner continues to be in great form in 2023, having broken three world records in two months at 1 mile (1.6 km), 1,500m and 5,000m, just before Budapest 2023.
"What a great year for me," Kipyegon exclaimed after the victory. "Making history, winning two gold medals in the world championship is my dream this season. I have waited patiently to be able to break the world record and win the double title. I pushed the copy. myself to the limit and I will continue to push myself in the future."
