South African goalkeeper 'helps' the Netherlands into the quarterfinals of the Women's World Cup
* Score: Roord 9', Beerensteyn 68'
In the 68th minute, the Netherlands counterattacked quickly for Lineth Beerensteyn to finish. The ball went into the right position, but goalkeeper Kaylin Swart let it through, causing South Africa to lead 0-2. Swart's mistake was a strong blow to the home team's equalizer effort. Before that, the Netherlands opened the scoring in the 9th minute with Jill Roord's close-range header in the corner kick.
South Africa only held the ball 30%, passing 260 passes compared to 627 of the Netherlands. But the African representative is no slouch, thanks to the speed of Thembi Kgatlana captain, Linda Mothhalo in counter-attacks. South Africa shot 14 shots with seven on target, slightly better than the Netherlands (12 shots, six on target). Particularly, Kgatlana had seven shots - the most of the match, in which four situations were faced but could not win against goalkeeper Van Domselaar - the goalkeeper was elected as the best player of the match.
Luck did not go hand in hand with South Africa in the match at Sydney this morning, August 6. In the first half, they suffered losses when two pillars - midfielder Jermaine Seoposnwe and defender Bambanani Mbane - were injured, had to leave the field early.
Despite losing 0-2 to the Netherlands, South Africa still left the tournament with many positive impressions after eliminating both Argentina and Italy in the group stage. The Netherlands entered the quarterfinals against Spain on June 11.
The orange team also suffered when attacking midfielder Danielle van de Donk received a yellow card in the 67th minute - the second card of the tournament, causing her to be suspended for the quarterfinals.
