Spain and Japan soon reach the quarterfinals of the World Cup 2023
* Scores: Abelleira 9', Hermoso 13' & 70', Alba Redondo 69' & 85'
Before Spain won, Japan also beat Costa Rica 2-0. The two teams have the same six points after two matches, but Spain leads Group C by goal difference (+8 vs +7). The two teams will determine the rank in the final match.
At Eden Park, Spain scored in the 9th minute with Teresa Abelleira's long shot from a distance of about 28 meters that made goalkeeper Eunice Sakala stand still. Four minutes later, the reigning Ballon d'Or Alexia Putellas hit the ball inside the box for Jennifer Hermoso to hit the ground to double the lead.
The match easily helped coach Jorge Vilda give opportunities to players who rarely played in the second half, in which Alba Redondo - who replaced Putellas - impressed with a brace in the 69th and 85th minutes. Between the two goals was a phase. Hermoso's goal in the 70th minute. The score could have been 5-0 if Zambia's goalkeeper Eunice Sakala hadn't been focused and saved some of Spain's shots.
This is Zambia's second 0-5 loss in a row, making them the most conceded team in the tournament. Meanwhile, Spain showed strength with a good play, proving the position of the championship candidate.
