Brazil striker Luis Suarez wants to liquidate his contract with Gremio club, then join Inter Miami to reunite with former teammate Lionel Messi.

According to ESPN Brazil, Suarez wants to return the entire salary he once received from Gremio. In addition, the 36-year-old striker accepts to pay an additional amount to liquidate the contract, which is valid until December 2024. However, the Gremio leadership has not made a final decision.

"The decision is up to the club president," Gremio coach Renato Gaucho said about Suarez wanting to liquidate his contract on July 25. "Everything revealed in the press is true, but only the club board can decide."

If released by Gremio, Suarez will join Inter Miami in the next few days, before the US summer transfer market closes on August 2. Inter Miami has also left a foreign player slot to wait for Suarez. Three of Suarez's former Barca teammates, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, all signed with Inter Miami in July.

Suarez joined Gremio in January 2023, after parting ways with Uruguayan club Atletico Nacional. Before that, he played for Ajax, Liverpool, Barca and Atletico Madrid. Suarez has only played 31 games, but has scored 16 goals for Gremio. Gremio is currently third in the Brazilian Championship and in the semi-finals of the National Cup.

Suarez is being treated for a knee injury. While the press reported that he wanted to liquidate his contract, the 36-year-old striker posted a photo with a physiotherapist on Instagram. "Work and always be professional," Suarez wrote.

Suarez is a close friend and teammate of Messi. Together, the two players won four La Liga, four Copa del Rey and one Champions League at Barca. Messi holds the record for scoring 672 goals for Barca, while Suarez is third with 198 goals.

On July 21, Messi started playing for Inter Miami. The Argentina captain helped the new club beat Cruz Azul 2-1 and Atlanta United 4-0, and also lead the South Group 3 Leagues Cup. Messi put his shoes on four of Inter Miami's six goals, including three direct goals and one assist.
