Hungary European and Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi defeated American opponent JuVaughn Harrison to win the world high jump gold for the first time in Budapest 2023.

In the final on August 22, Tamberi and Harrison conquered the bars of 2m25, 2m29 and 2m33, respectively.

When raising the bar to 2m36, Tamberi succeeded in the first jump and Harrison only succeeded in the second jump. The 24-year-old American athlete raised the bar to 2m38, but failed in three jumps.

Therefore, despite failing twice at 2m38, Tamberi still won the gold medal. The Italian athlete raised the bar to 2m4 to break the best personal record of 2m39. He failed for the first time, did not jump the remaining two rounds but ran to celebrate the first world gold medal in his career.

Meanwhile, Mutaz Barshim - Qatar athlete who holds the Asian high jump record and owns the second best record in history with 2m43 - won bronze with 2m33. He was disillusioned with the fourth consecutive world championship after winning London 2017, Doha 2019 and Eugene 2022. Barshim missed the world title for the first time since the silver medal in Rio 2016 and fourth place at Beijing 2015.

Tamberi and Barshim once created the most beautiful moment in Olympic history when sharing the gold medal of high jump Tokyo 2021. In the final competition at that time, both athletes did not fail to jump once, from the first bar to the level of 2m37. , and then failed to do three jumps at 2m39.

"I feel like an ordinary person who has just defeated superheroes," said Tamberi, after passionately cheering with Soufiane El Bakkali, a Moroccan athlete who just won the 3,000m gold medal in the obstacle course. "It's crazy, this is an indescribable feeling. I received the reward, after all the sacrifices and efforts."

Barshim congratulates his best friend Tamberi on winning the world gold medal to complete the collection of titles. The Qatari athlete is determined to keep the gold medal at Paris 2024 and reveals that this is his last appearance at the Olympics. "It will be another intense competition, not for me to take revenge," he expressed.
