The Bayern goalkeeper was criticized for being 'a few centimeters short'

According to some European football experts, goalkeeper Yann Sommer was too short to save in the quarter-final first leg loss to Man City in the Champions League.

"He's a few centimeters short," former Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller commented on Sky Sports about Yann Sommer's failed save before Rodri's shot into the top corner. "If I had stood there, maybe Manuel Neuer would have saved the game."

On the Amazon Prime channel, former Germany player Benedikt Howedes also said that Sommer lacks two or three centimeters to succeed in this phase.

In the 27th minute, midfielder Rodri suddenly turned the ball inside and then cut the left foot into the top corner of the Bayern goal. Goalkeeper Sommer leaned in full force but could not save.

On Sport1 channel, commentator Oliver Forster affirmed that Bayern's main goalkeeper is not world-class, and this is the difference that makes Bayern lose heavily. Former coach Peter Neururer said: "If present, Neuer would have saved. A goalkeeper with the ability to block and judge like Neuer could have saved this goal."

On Twitter, many fans agree with this view. Neuer has been Bayern's number one goalkeeper for many years, but is out of action due to a skiing accident after the 2022 World Cup. During the January 23rd transfer window, Bayern spent $9 million to buy Sommer from Moenchengladbach. Neuer is 1.93 m tall - 10 cm longer than Sommer.

Sommer is one of the top goalkeepers in the Bundesliga and Switzerland. In the penalty shootout in the 1/8 round of Euro 2021, the 34-year-old goalkeeper helped Switzerland beat France 5-4.

In the remaining two goals against Man City yesterday, Sommer was not at fault. In the 70th minute, centre-back Dayot Upamecano let Jack Grealish steal the ball and then passed it to Erling Haaland. The ball was then stuffed in for Bernando Silva's header to double the lead. Six minutes later, Bayern's defense continued to be helpless before a high ball, when John Stones headed the ball to Haaland to cushion the close, sealing a 3-0 victory.

At the end of the game, Sommer had two more shows, neutralizing Julian Alvarez's long-range shot or Rodri's header in the penalty area.

Bayern and Man City have the second leg at the Allianz Arena on April 19. The winning team will advance to the semi-finals against Real or Chelsea. In addition to the Champions League, Bayern also target in the Bundesliga - where they are leading with 58 points after 27 matches, two points ahead of Dortmund.
