In 2001, when the country's football turned to a professional model, the Saigon Port Club won the championship the following season (2001-2002).

However, at this time, when Vietnamese football is in the process of going professional, the championship of Saigon Port is not appreciated. The proof is that a season later, they were relegated. Since then, this team has been renamed Southern Steel Saigon Port.

In 2008, the name of Saigon Port was abolished, transferred and renamed as HCMC Club. HCM. It was the golden age of this Southwest team. By 2011, Long An was relegated. They returned to V.League a year later, but in 2017, Long An dropped to First place and has been diving ever since.

Also in 2017, Quang Nam suddenly won the V.League championship. However, after many years of unstable competition, in the 2020 season, the home team of Tam Ky Stadium returned to first place. Quang Nam has an investment to play V.League but in turn missed the opportunity.

In this season, Quang Nam is at the top of the table after 15 rounds of first place in 2023. However, the gap with the opponent ranked behind PVF-CAND has 3 points. If you can't win a promotion ticket, it's a big defeat for the former V.League king.
