The referee made a mistake in the Man Utd - Wolves match and the whistle was suspended
Referee Simon Hooper, VAR referee Michael Salisbury and assistant Richard West all admitted mistakes when not giving Wolves a penalty at the end of the defeat against Man Utd on August 14. By the morning of August 15, London time, the Arbitration Administration (PGMOL) announced that all three were fined and would be absent from the second round of the Premier League this weekend.
Wolves coach Gary O'Neil revealed that he received an apology from Jonathan Moss - the head of PGMOL - for this mistake right after the game. According to O'Neil, Mr. Moss admitted Wolves were not awarded a clear penalty and was surprised when the VAR team did not participate.
Later, PGMOL Director Howard Webb also sent a message to O'Neil to acknowledge the mistake. Webb wants the PGMOL to take an open and transparent approach, and the referees take more responsibility for the wrong decisions this season and have been in direct contact with Wolves.
Of the three referees suspended this weekend, Salisbury received a penalty for a mistake related to VAR last season. He was banned when VAR denied a penalty for Brighton - a situation where Kaoru Mitoma was tripped by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the penalty area - in a 1-2 defeat to Tottenham. Later, Webb also had to apologize to Brighton for this mistake.
Earlier this year, Julen Lopetegui - O'Neil's predecessor - after captain Ruben Neves said that Wolves suffered many unfavorable decisions from the referee. This summer, Neves arrived at Saudi Pro League's Al Hilal for $60 million.
O'Neil declined to comment on this information, but hinted that the referee made a decision in Man Utd's favor because of the atmosphere at Old Trafford. Since then, the Wolves coach believes that the VAR team must work effectively and be more helpful in such controversial situations.
VAR was controversial in the first round of the English Premier League in Man Utd's match with Wolves at Old Trafford. In the sixth minute, when they were leading 0-1, Wolves got on the right wing and there were four visitors in the penalty area. The ball is hung towards the positions of Craig Dawson and Sasa Kalajdzic.
Then, the ball hit Dawson's head, and Onana missed and collided with Kalajdzic. Referee Simon Hooper did not give a penalty and even showed a yellow card to Wolves coach Gary O'Neil for his reactions off the touchline. VAR entered but did not change the judgment on the field.
After the match, coach Erik ten Hag admitted that the final decision belonged to the referee and Man Utd was lucky not to be penalized. Meanwhile, Onana insists that he is not worried about the possibility of Man Utd taking a penalty in this situation
VAR was controversial many times last season. In round 23, VAR referee Lee Mason forgot, or didn't, draw the offside line in Ivan Toney's goal, helping Brentford draw 1-1 at Arsenal. After that, VAR referee John Brooks again marked the wrong player for offside in Crystal Palace's 1-1 draw with Brighton. PGMOL admits VAR team made two mistakes, must apologize to Arsenal and Brighton.
