El Salvador referee Jose Arnoldo Amaya was beaten to death after being shown a red card in an amateur match.

The competition was held on June 13th at Toluca Stadium in El Salvador. After showing a second yellow card to a player, referee Amaya was attacked by the man, many of his team-mates and spectators. The council's crackdown resulted in the 63-year-old referee bleeding internally, being hospitalized and later dying at Zakamil Hospital.

Police arrested one of the attackers, Juan Manuel Cruz Lorenzana. This person is also a member of the local gang.

The Salvadoran Football Association said in a statement: "We condemn the violence that led to the death of referee Amaya. We join hands to share the pain of his dear family."

Referee Amaya has 20 years of experience in national, college and amateur tournaments.

El Salvador is currently ranked 74th in FIFA. They played in the 1970 and 1982 World Cups but were both knocked out of the group stages. El Salvador's best results in the Central, North American and Caribbean championships were runners-up in 1963 and 1981.

Violence and attacks on referees are not uncommon in the lower leagues in South America. In October 2021, William Ribeiro of Sao Paulo RS was arrested for manslaughter for kicking referee Rodrigo Crivellaro in the head in Brazil's second division.
