The star of the English Premier League 13 times the home team lost
On May 17, Toney was suspended by the FA and banned from all football-related activities for eight months for betting violations. The England striker is accused of 262 breaches of FA Rule E8 between February 25, 2017 and January 23, 2021. The FA subsequently withdrew 30 of these violations, and Toney admitted the remaining 232 violations.
On May 26, the FA informed in writing the reasons for Toney's eight-month ban. Accordingly, the England striker has 126 bets on matches in the league that the host club has participated in or qualified to participate in that season. Of these 126 bets, 29 involved the club Toney was registered with or playing on loan at the time. In 16 of those 29 bets, Toney's team won 15 different games, and the striker played in 11 of those games and was benched for 90 minutes in the rest.
The remaining 13 times, Toney chose the door that the host club lost in seven different matches from August 22, 2017 to March 3, 2018. In which, Toney has 11 failed bets on Newcastle while playing for Wigan Athletic and Scunthorpe United on loan. The other two were related to the Wigan match against Aston Villa, when Toney was on loan at Wigan but was not on the registration list.
Toney also breached FA Rule E8.2 on insider information, by informing a friend that he would start the club's next game on March 29, 2018. The 27-year-old striker argues that everyone knows he is highly capable of starting, but accepting that is a violation of the rules. Toney also admitted to lying to investigators more than once, although initially denied betting on football.
According to the FA's documents, if Toney pleads not guilty, the FA will impose a 15-month ban starting from the start of the 2023-2024 season "to properly reflect the seriousness of the admitted violations, including the bet the host club lost, even though Toney did not play". But by admitting the error and showing "real regret", the 1996-born striker is said to have avoided paying large sums and taking a longer break, resulting in a 25% reduction in suspension time.
According to the FA's announcement on May 17, Toney will be banned until January 16, 2024 and fined £50,000 (about more than $ 60,000). He can return to training with Brentford from September 17 and play in the second half of the 2023-2024 season.
In addition, the FA's Independent Commission of Inquiry revealed Toney was diagnosed with a gambling addiction. The FA document explains: "The lack of control over gambling clearly reflects the player's diagnosed gambling addiction. Toney appears to have stopped betting on football, though still betting on sports and sports. another casino. He is determined to solve his gambling problem with therapy by the end of this season. So after deliberation, the Commission reduced the three-month penalty to eight months."
Then, on the homepage, Brentford announced that he accepted the FA's written reasons and would "do everything to assist Toney and his family in resolving the issues that arise". Brentford said discussions and all matters relating to the incident will be kept confidential "to protect Toney and his family". The owner of the Gtech Community stadium considers "the matter to be over" and looks forward to welcoming Toney back to training in September and then playing in the Premier League from January 2024.
Toney has been an emerging star of English football for nearly two years. Last season, when Brentford was newly promoted, he scored 14 goals in all competitions, including 12 in the Premier League. In the Premier League this season, Toney has scored 20 goals, just behind Tottenham's Harry Kane (27 goals) and Man City's Erling Haaland (36). Toney's high form helped Brentford to ninth with 56 points - a position considered high compared to the size, budget and modest resources of this team.
In September 2022, Toney was called up to England for the first time to prepare for the matches against Germany and Italy in the UEFA Nations League. In March 2023, he was again called up for Euro 2024 qualifying, and made his debut in a 2–0 win over Ukraine at Wembley.
