Hungary US athlete Sha'Carri Richardson won his first major title in his career when he won the 100m gold medal at the world championships in Budapest 2023.

At the 100m final on August 21, Richardson was at a disadvantage when running in lane 9 but still finished first with 10 seconds 65. She won her first major title in her career and set a world record, knocking over the column. The 10 seconds 67 mark was set by Jamaican senior Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce at the Eugene 2022 tournament.

Richardson became the fifth fastest female 100m athlete in history, with the world record still held by the late American legend Florence Griffith-Joyner since 1988, with a time of 10 seconds 49.

Richardson also helped the US break Jamaica's dominance in the women's 100m world, when the last two titles belonged to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Before Richardson, the late Tori Bowie was the closest American runner to win a 100m gold medal at London 2017.

Richardson went through the tournament ups and downs, making it through the qualifiers with a best of 10 seconds 92. But an hour before the final, the 23-year-old runner was only 10 seconds 84 in the semifinals and finished third, behind Shericka. Jackson of Jamaica and Marie Jose Ta Lou of Ivory Coast. With the top two going straight to the final, Richardson has to wait for the next semi-final to see if her record is enough to progress.

Budapest 2023 sees a change in lane placement, based on performance. Accordingly, athletes with good parameters will be placed in the inner lanes and the descending achievements will be placed in the outer lanes. Therefore, despite achieving enough results to continue, Richardson was at a disadvantage when he had to run in lane 9 in the final. Defending champion Fraser-Pryce was in lane 5, with Shericka Jackson right next to her.

But Richardson made history by becoming the first athlete to win the championship after reaching the final based on performance, rather than direct entry. Behind her was Jackson with 10 seconds 72, while Fraser-Pryce became disillusioned with the title three times in a row when she won bronze with 10 seconds 77.

In 2021, Richardson finished first in the 100m in the US Olympic qualifying round with 10 seconds 86 and is a strong candidate for the gold medal in Toyko. However, she tested positive for marijuana use - which she explained she used to get over her mother's death - and was absent from Toyko 2021. In 2022, Richardson missed the 100m final. and 200m at the US Athletics Championships, and thus missed the worlds in Eugene, Oregon.

It was not until this year that Richardson found his form again. She won the 100m at the Diamond League in Doha with a record of 10 seconds 76 and then won the US track and field championship with 10 seconds 82. Thanks to that, she qualified for Budapest 2023 and became the new champion.

"The important thing is that no matter what happens, you never lose yourself," said Richardson after winning the gold medal at Budapest 2023. "You're going to have great days, bad days. But you live to see. Tomorrow".
