The US team convenes a series of young stars for the FIBA World Cup 2023: High picks are present
In addition to the initial focus list with 12 names announced 2 weeks ago, the US basketball team has just summoned a series of young stars to prepare for the final round of the FIBA World Cup 2023 taking place at the end of August.
According to prestigious journalists Shams Charania and Joe Vardon of The Athletic, the list of additional summons this time includes the following names:
- Chet Holmgren (Oklahoma City Thunder), pick 2 NBA Draft 2022, 21 years old
- Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons), 1st pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, 21 years old
- Jalen Green (Houston Rockets), 2nd pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, 21 years old
- Keegan Murray (Sacramento Kings), pick 4 NBA Draft 2022, 22 years old
- Jalen Williams (Oklahoma City Thunder), pick 12 NBA Draft 2022, 22 years old
- Quentin Grimes (New York Knicks), pick 25 NBA Draft 2021, 23 years old
These are the 6 most prominent players with 4 players being the first top-4 picks of the 2021 and 2022 NBA Drafts. The other two names - Jalen Williams and Quentin Grimes - are later picks but are also extremely quality players.
This group of young talents will gather with the US team in Las Vegas in the near future, serving two main purposes:
- At the same time, they still practice as an official member of the team, ready to replace players in the main squad in case of injury.
Reporter Shams Charania said the six players mentioned above will practice and travel with the US team to all friendly matches, then the World Cup finals in the Philippines to act as permanent backup plans.
At the upcoming 2023 FIBA World Cup finals, the US basketball team was determined to rejuvenate the entire squad. Most members will play for the national team for the first time to attend a big arena.
Unlike Olympic basketball, the FIBA World Cup often does not attract the top stars of the US team. The stars expected to lead the army of coach Steve Kerr include Anthony Edwards, Mikal Bridges and defender Jalen Brunson.
The United States' latest achievement at the Basketball World Cup was 7th overall in 2019, which is also the country's all-time worst position in major tournaments.
Although fans do not have high expectations for Steve Kerr's teachers and students, surely the US team will be determined to get the best ranking to forget the bad World Cup 4 years ago.
