New Zealand Midfielder Duong Thi Van was injured after a collision with teammate Pham Hai Yen on the training ground, absent from the opening match of the 2023 Women's World Cup.

*Vietnam - USA: 8am Saturday 22/7, Hanoi time.

The collision occurred during an aerial dispute, during a practice session on July 19. At the closed practice session today, July 20, Duong Thi Van was still absent, while Pham Hai Yen returned, appearing with a beanie on her head.

According to a source from MetaSports, Duong Thi Van is almost certainly unable to play in the opening match against the US on July 22, and is expected to return in the match against Portugal on July 27. This is a big loss for Vietnam because Duong Thi Van is a strong player and plays aggressively in the midfield.

To replace, coach Mai Duc Chung will most likely choose Thai Thi Thao, Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy or Nguyen Thi Thuy Trang. In addition, winger Nguyen Thi Tuyet Dung or captain striker Huynh Nhu can also step back to kick in the central midfield position.

Duong Thi Van is one of the shortest players at the 2023 Women's World Cup with 1.5m. She was born in 1994 in Binh Luc district, Ha Nam province, but was not chosen by the rich traditional club Phong Phu Ha Nam. After finishing the high school exam in 2012, Van fell in love with Quang Ninh football and played for Vietnam Coal and Minerals since then. Duong Thi Van has joined the Vietnamese team since 2013 and is associated with many successes of women's football over the past time.

Regarding security, FIFA and host New Zealand sent a police officer to closely monitor the team's activities, combined with other security staff on duty 24/7 at locations such as hotels and training grounds. This work is further tightened after the shooting that left three people dead this morning in the city of Auckland.
