Three Vietnamese players go deep in the European Open

Duc Duong Quoc Hoang, Luong Duc Thien and Nguyen Cong Thanh all entered the knockout round of pool 9 European Open 2023.

All three Vietnamese players mentioned above had to fall to the losing bracket on the final day of the double qualifying round on August 10. However, they all won the decisive matches to enter the knockout round, with a total of 64 hands.

Cong Thanh won the first place for Vietnam after beating Greek player Antonis Kakaris 9-7. Before that, he was pushed to the losing branch by Quoc Hoang himself when two compatriots met in the first match.

After winning Cong Thanh, the Emperor defeated Jonas Kornmesser 9-3, but lost to Daniel Maciol in the last round of the winning bracket. Being pushed to the losing bracket, the number one player in Vietnam defeated Pijus Labutis 9-6 to win the second place for Vietnam to enter the knockout round. The third place belonged to Duc Thien after he beat Kostas Koukiadakis 9-7.

Among the players who have been eliminated, there are players like Sanjin Pehlivanovic or Ko Ping Chung. However, most of the top players like Francisco Sánchez Ruiz, Fedor Gorst, Albin Ouschan or Shane van Boening also entered the knockout round today 11/8.

In round 1/32, Quoc Hoang met an underrated British player Imran Majid at 15:00, Hanoi time. At the same time, Cong Thanh met the top Filipino player Johann Chua, while Duc Thien met a Greek player, Dimitris Loukatos at 16:30.

The European Open is a Matchroom tournament, taking place from August 8 to August 13 in Fulda, Germany, bringing together most of the world's top players. The champion will receive $30,000 in prize money, while the players who have made it to the knockout stages will be guaranteed to receive at least $500.
