TPC Southwind - the pitch that "swallows" the most balls on the PGA Tour
The organization that owns the first-class golf arena in the United States began to count the number of balls in water traps throughout the system since 2003. Up to now, when combining the numbers, the top 3 courses have swallowed the ball, from the top, respectively, including TPC Southwind - 6,166 balls. , Stadium of TPC Sawgrass golf complex in Florida - 5,089 balls, Muirfield Village in Ohio - 5,022 balls. That result reflects that water traps are a "specialty" in these three places.
Particularly, TPC Southwind is the most formidable when there are 10 holes available with ponds and lakes to challenge the ability of the players. Of these, the par3 11 is the most dangerous, with an oasis green that resembles the 17th hole at the world-famous TPC Sawgrass.
In 2021, Kim Si Woo, then holding three cups on the PGA Tour, delivered five shots into the lake surrounding the green on hole 11, taking a total of 13 shots to finish, including five penalty strokes. This is the worst par3 record at a tournament outside of the major group since the PGA Tour started rolling out its expert database, back in 1983.
According to Golfweek, if you put all 6,166 lost balls at TPC Southwind in a straight line, the corresponding length will be about 263.12 meters. As for the weight, they weigh about 283 kg.
This week, TPC Southwind is the battleground of St. Jude Championship, from August 10 to 13, opens a series of three playoffs to determine the FedEx Cup owner on the PGA Tour 2022-2023.
The stadium was designed by Ron Prichard in consultation with two players Hubert Green and Fuzzy Zoeller, and opened in 1988.
