With the last five head-to-head matches won, Vietnam has a historical advantage over Malaysia before the semi-finals of Southeast Asia U23 today.

*Vietnam - Malaysia: 4:00 p.m. Thursday, August 24, on MetaSports.

The last time Vietnam lost to Malaysia in the U23 system was 10 years ago, when the team lost 1-2 in the group stage of the 2013 SEA Games in Myanmar. Since then, Vietnam have won all five matches against this opponent, scoring 12 goals and conceding only three times.

In the last confrontation, the team won Malaysia 2-1 in the group stage of the SEA Games in May 2023, with a brace of striker Nguyen Van Tung. However, compared to the players who started that match, Vietnam only had goalkeeper Quan Van Chuan, while Malaysia still kept more than half of the squad before the reunion in this year's tournament.

In the younger systems, Vietnam lost to Malaysia in the most recent confrontations. The team lost 0-3 to this opponent in the 2022 AFF U19 semi-final. And in the 2019 AFF U15 semi-final, the team also lost 1-3 to Malaysia. Malaysia U23 currently has many players who have participated in the two matches mentioned above, and Vietnam also has Nguyen Van Truong, Nguyen Quoc Viet, Nguyen Duc Viet or Khuat Van Khang playing in the U19 tournament last year. The semi-finals of Southeast Asia U23 today will be an opportunity for this group of players to claim Malaysia's debt.

At the team level, Vietnam is also unbeaten against Malaysia for the past nine years, since the loss at the 2014 AFF Cup. The team won seven and drew the last one against this opponent.

The good confrontation results between Vietnam and Malaysia in the national team and U23 system over the past decade have been marked by coach Park Hang-seo because he led the team in 8 of the 13 unbeaten matches mentioned above. The achievements of the youth teams under coach Hoang Anh Tuan are also superior to this opponent, when he helped U19 go unbeaten in three matches against Malaysia in 2015-2019.

The goal of Hoang Anh Tuan's teachers and students at U23 Southeast Asia 2023 is to reach the final, so the team must win against Malaysia. The opponent of the defending champion in the next match is Indonesia or Thailand.
