Vietnam loses the heaviest match in the Women's World Cup 2023
*Score: Martens 8', Snoeijs 11', Brugts 18', 57', Roord 23', 83', Donk 45'.
Vietnam bid farewell to the World Cup after three defeats and no goals. In front of the Netherlands with a strong desire to win to occupy the top of the table, coach Mai Duc Chung's army soon broke down, and lost the heaviest match since the beginning of the 2023 World Cup. Before that, the biggest victory belonged to Norway with a score of 6 -0 against another Southeast Asian representative, the Philippines.
The Netherlands launched an attack right from the opening, so Vietnam took advantage of the opportunity and created it first. The team's best situation came from Thanh Nha's cross into the penalty area, but Bich Thuy in the face-to-face shot shot into the sky.
Since then, the Netherlands has dominated the game and scored four consecutive goals in 14 minutes. In the eighth minute, defender Dominique Janssen hung in the penalty area for Lieke Martens to rush in to block the ball before Thu Thuong's interception. The Vietnamese central defender could not do anything, so Martens took advantage of the opportunity to throw the ball over goalkeeper Kim Thanh's head into the net.
The next Dutch goals came easily, when the shooter was not close. In the 11th minute, striker Katja Snoeijs received the ball in the penalty area, then freely turned his left foot to the post, making Kim Thanh stand still looking at the ball into the net. In the 18th minute, defender Esmee Brugts set up a masterpiece from a distance of nearly 30 meters to the high corner, making the Vietnamese goalkeeper no chance to stop. Four minutes later, Janssen passed and then crossed the ball like Jill Roord to cushion the ball into an empty net.
In the stands, Vietnamese fans still cheered for the home team even though the match was arranged at that time. Outside the touchline, coach Mai Duc Chung loudly scolded the player for being distracted and revealing too much space in the penalty area. Immediately, he replaced Thu Thuong and Hoang Thi Loan on the field, bringing in Chuong Thi Kieu and My Anh.
Vietnam played tighter after that, but by the end of the first half still conceded a fifth goal. Brugts hung the ball from the left into the penalty area for Roord to charge into a one-touch volley. Kim Thanh made a beautiful save, but the ball bounced off and Donk rushed into the mud to hit the roof of the Vietnamese net. The scary thing is that the Netherlands doesn't want to stop at five goals, because they always pick up the ball back in the middle of the field after each goal.
However, the team defended tighter in the second half with the goal of limiting as many goals as possible. At one point, the British Guardian newspaper said that Vietnam's defense was as good as in the opening match against the US, when preventing the opponent from entering the penalty area. However, the team still conceded two more goals in the second half. The first was Brugts' long-range masterpiece in the 57th minute, then Roord's close-range header at the end of the game.
The Netherlands scored 42 times in this match, and dominated most of the important parameters. Vietnam's only goal in the second half came from Hai Linh's shot in the penalty area but missed the post. The team left the tournament with only two shots towards the goal.
Vietnam closed its first experience in the World Cup, when only five players could not play: goalkeeper Kieu Oanh, defender Thuy Nga, midfielder Thuy Trang and strikers Thuy Hang and Vu Thi Hoa. After this tournament, coach Mai Duc Chung is likely to bid farewell to the team, opening a new chapter for the women's team.
