Who is Stephen Curry backing in the race to the title of MVP of the NBA 2022-23?
When it comes to pocketing the NBA MVP title, Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry has plenty of experience. He has twice been voted the best player of the season, and also went down in NBA history when he became the first player to achieve an absolute number of votes (unanimous MVP in 2016).
Gone are the days of single-handedly carrying the Golden State Warriors to chase individual titles, so if you were to be voted MVP this season, who would Stephen Curry name? In a recent interview, the Warriors superstar chose Joel Embiid.
"I think it's going to go to Joel," Curry told Bleacher Report. surge that not many people could have predicted.
He made Philly pay more attention and led the team to a remarkable achievement. I'm not on the MVP board, but if I were to be selected, my vote would go to Joel Embiid."
One of Curry's teammates, Draymond Green, also openly supported Joel Embiid in the East instead of rival Nikola Jokic in the West:
“If Joel hadn't lost himself, the MVP title would have gone to him. Great stats, consistent form, good track record… I think Joel should win the MVP this season as a reward for his hard work throughout the season.”
All-Star defender Damian Lillard shared the same thing: "I would choose Embiid because I feel this bigman has been in terrible form since the beginning of the tournament, and the team is performing well. I have a feeling that Joel should win MVP one of the last two colors, but both belong to Nikola Jokic."
In the previous two seasons, Nikola Jokic and Joel Embiid created a two-horse race to the title of MVP. And as Lillard shared, Embiid has twice finished second behind Denver Nuggets' bigman.
This year things seem to be changing as Joel has better stats. The 29-year-old Bigman set a career-high milestone in many aspects, notably scoring (33.0 PPG) on the FG index (54%). In addition, Joel is also on his way to the title of NBA's top scorer this season.
"I don't think you can give the same person MVP many years in a row when that person's opponent is playing well, even statistically better. I put my faith in Joel" , the 32-year-old Blazers defender added.
Besides Embiid and Jokic, another candidate not to be missed is Giannis Antetokounmpo. No one really stands out from the rest, making for an exciting race to the MVP title this season.
MVP results will be announced at the Playoffs round, expected around mid-May.
