Why was the World Cup pushed down to the youth team by the club?
The contract between Amallah and Liege is valid until June 2023. The 26-year-old midfielder did not renew, to be free to leave after the contract expires. After unsuccessful negotiations, the Liege leadership decided to push Amallah down to the youth team for the remaining 6 months.
"We are not going to do anything to increase the value of players who are leaving for free. We are not going to serve other clubs. The easiest thing to do is let them play, but it will become a signal. The fact that they continue to play and then leave freely will be death for the club," Pierre Locht, chairman of Liege, confirmed in Het Laatste Niews on December 27.
Liege manager Ronny Deila regretted not being able to use one of the club's best players. However, he stressed that the club sets the direction and that sometimes players need to "keep in mind certain values".
In nine appearances in the Belgian Championship at the beginning of the 2022-2023 season, Amallah contributed four goals and one pass to clear the deck. Liege is ranked sixth after 18 games, with nine wins, two draws and seven losses.
